Fund for Louisville 2018 Announcement

Fund for Louisville Adapts a New Strategic Focus

Created by visionary philanthropists who wanted to support their community today and beyond their own lifetimes, the Fund for Louisville allows the Community Foundation to respond to emerging needs and opportunities in the Louisville area.  Because the Fund for Louisville is endowed, the earnings from the fund will support our community forever.

Since 2014, the Foundation has granted $1.2 million from the Fund for Louisville to support nonprofit capacity building for 70 Louisville nonprofits. We believe that strong nonprofit organizations lead to more effective programs and greater community impact. By investing in these organizations for things like technology upgrades, strategy development, professional development and evaluation and feasibility studies, we have helped strengthen the leaders, systems, and plans that enable nonprofits to pursue and achieve their missions.

We remain committed to capacity building, and as an innovator in philanthropy we continually evaluate Louisville’s greatest challenges and opportunities, using data, research, and on-the-ground knowledge and experience to inform our grant making approaches.

As a founding partner and continuing supporter of the Greater Louisville Project, we were drawn to its latest report. “A Focus on Poverty” highlights how multi-dimensional poverty (e.g. scarcity in education, health, income and employment) disproportionately affect Louisville’s western and south central neighborhoods and demonstrates clearly how scarcity in parts of our community affects us all.

Starting with our 2018 grants, the Community Foundation will use the Fund for Louisville to make grants that respond to the findings in the Greater Louisville Project’s report “A Focus on Poverty.” We will apply a strategic focus to the capacity building grants by investing in the nonprofit organizations which are strengthening the people and places in Louisville’s 11 most distressed ZIP codes.

The Community Foundation is committed to this focus for at least three years, with the hope that these grants build the infrastructure these organizations need to transform lives in the most distressed parts of our community.
